Accessibility in words: writing for every reader

Summary
Session 2/5 in the VerseOne Accessibility series
Thursday 4th February | 11:00 - 11:45 AM
Tailored specifically for NHS comms, digital, marketing, and web teams.
Your content makes sense to you, but does it make sense to a patient reading it for the first time?
- Acronyms are used without ever being explained.
- One long block of text with no headings, so readers lose their place halfway down.
- Key instructions buried in the middle of a paragraph, where anyone who struggles to scan text will miss them.
None of these break anything on the page. But each one makes your content harder to read, and some readers won't get past it.
In this live session, we'll focus entirely on the language side of accessibility: plain language, reading age, structure and tone, and how each one affects the patients and staff trying to use your services.
What we'll cover
- Plain language: Why everyday words help people find what they need, and where jargon and acronyms get in the way.
- Reading age: What reading age is, and why it matters for the people using your website.
- Chunking your content: How paragraph length and page structure affect how easily people can read and scan a page.
- Writing for neurodivergent readers: How the way you word and structure content affects readers with ADHD, autism or dyslexia.
- Tone and voice: How the way your content sounds affects whether people understand it and trust it.
