Accessibility in sight: designing for low vision

Event types

  • NHS

Summary

Session 1/5 in the VerseOne Accessibility series

Friday 6th November | 11:00 - 11:45 AM

Tailored specifically for NHS comms, digital, marketing, and web teams.

Your website looks fine to you. But what does it look like to a patient with low vision?

  • Light grey text floating on a white background.

  • A call-to-action button that blends into the background banner.

  • An event poster uploaded as a flat image, with crucial details written inside that blur and break when the screen resizes.

  • A photo with no alt text, leaving anyone who can't make it out with zero context.

None of these look like problems - until you see your site the way your users do.

In this live session, we'll focus entirely on the visual side of accessibility: colour, contrast, and imagery, and how each one directly impacts the patients and staff trying to use your services.

What we'll cover

  • Colour contrast: Why text that looks crystal clear to you can be entirely unreadable for someone with low vision.

  • The reality of images: How visual elements and photographs actually come across to people with various visual impairments.

  • Mastering alt text: How to write concise, meaningful alt text that tells users what an image actually shows (without keyword stuffing).

  • The "text-in-images" trap: Why embedding text inside graphics causes massive readability issues, especially when images resize or zoom on mobile devices.
