5 things you can do to make sure your web project runs smoothly

To give you a helping hand for your current or forthcoming web projects, we have gone ahead and put together our 5 top things you can do to make sure your project runs smoothly and keeps to the plan.

1. Know your browsers, devices, and web jargon.

  • Will your board be evaluating the new site on a square screen running IE7? On an iPad mini?
  • What browsers are your customers/stakeholders/audience groups likely to use?
  • You will have a more successful site if you and your team have good understanding of web technologies.

2. Have clear lines of decision-making.

  • Who is going to sign off each project milestone?
  • Who needs to see any creative work before the site build begins? The more people who need to review it, the more time should be allowed for review.
  • Who is going to sign off that the completion criteria have been met?

3. Have named, dedicated communications and technical resources.

  • Even the most communications-led website sometimes needs a technical resource on hand to help or translate.

4. Know your deadlines and responsibilities.

  • Every project stage requires your input, feedback, and sign-off.
  • Most of the time, the stages are dependent: if you miss one deadline, your whole project can be delayed by these dependencies.
  • Chances are good that your resources and your supplier’s are booked well in advance. It can be hard to get a project back on track once it is delayed because future time has already been allocated to other projects.
  • Once you and your supplier agree a project plan, you expect your supplier to stick to it—and you should expect this of yourselves, too.

5. Be disciplined.

  • Agree a regular time for project status calls, and never miss or postpone them.
  • Emails are great, but sometimes they can’t explain the heart of an issue. Nothing beats a regular phone call.
  • Make sure that you and your resources have specific time booked in your schedules to work on the web project, and that colleagues and managers know when this is.
